Start with Space.
- Open QuickLook Pro once.
The setup window shows whether the preview and thumbnail extensions are installed.
- Enable the extensions.
Open System Settings → General → Login Items & Extensions → Quick Look, then enable QuickLook Pro. The setup window also has an Open System Settings button.
- Try a supported file.
Select a JSON file, Markdown document, source file, ZIP archive, or folder in Finder and press Space. You can close the setup app afterward.
Requires macOS 15 or later on a Mac with Apple silicon.
Common questions
I still see the standard macOS preview.
Confirm that QuickLook Pro is enabled under Quick Look in System Settings. Close the preview, choose another supported file, and press Space again. If the extension does not appear, open QuickLook Pro once and restart your Mac.
macOS chooses which extension handles each file type. Another installed app or a built-in preview may take priority. Standard CSV files currently use Apple’s built-in preview.
Which files can I preview?
QuickLook Pro supports JSON and JSONL, YAML and TOML, SQLite databases, environment files, Markdown, many source-code formats, folders, ZIP archives, and supported GZIP and tar archives. Some formats depend on the file associations registered on your Mac.
Advanced YAML or TOML syntax may appear as highlighted text. Encrypted archives, ZIP64, split ZIP archives, and sparse tar files are not supported.
Why is a preview incomplete?
Large files and deeply nested archives have size, row, and time limits to keep Finder responsive. A partial preview is labeled. Use the file’s usual application when you need the complete contents.
Does it change my files or default apps?
Previews are read-only. QuickLook Pro does not change your default Open With applications. Archive previews do not extract files to disk, and SQLite databases are opened read-only.
Does anything leave my Mac?
The app processes your files locally. It has no accounts, advertising, analytics, or file uploads. Read the privacy policy for details, including information you choose to send when asking for help.
How do I turn it off?
Disable QuickLook Pro under System Settings → General → Login Items & Extensions → Quick Look. You can also remove the app from Applications. Your original files remain unchanged.
